Note about reticulocyte index:
Reticulocyte index is calculated by the method described by Bessman in Clinical Methods, 1990. This method was chosen because it provides for a continuously variable correction factor rather than the quantum jumps found in other formulas, such as a change from 1.0 to 1.5 when going from Hct: 41 to Hct: 40.5 according to the formula in the Housestaff Handbook/Palm MedCalc:
Correction factor | |||
Hct | Bessman | MedCalc | Mdcalc.com |
10 | 4.5 | 2.5 | 2.5 |
15 | 3 | 2.5 | 2.5 |
20 | 2.25 | 2 | 2.5 |
25 | 1.8 | 2 | 1.5 |
30 | 1.5 | 1.5 | 1.5 |
35 | 1.285714 | 1.5 | 1 |
40 | 1.125 | 1.5 | 1 |
45 | 1 | 1 | 1 |
The values for reticulocyte index generally correlate, but there are differences:
